As followers of Christ, we are told that God desires to use what we say to help others heal, and grow spiritually. He would like to use our speech to encourage and assist others when there is an occasion or need. In this world it is very easy to get pulled into the spirit of speaking negative, cynical words that tear down, and create more injury to wounded hearts. We are told in James 1, “the tongue is a small part of the body yet it carries great power!” In general, no good can come from gossip, lying, being highly opinionated (thinking you know it all), and judging others. God wants us to humble ourselves; turning away from this type of damaging, destructive talk, and use positive, truthful, words, motivated out of His love, to encourage and build up one another. For the truth is a bright beam of light shining that penetrates into every area of our lives, and gives instruction and correction. We must guard our speech, and never let ugly or hateful words come from our mouth, but instead we must let our words become beautiful gifts that encourage others; doing this by speaking words of grace to help them. Our speech is powerful, and needs to be beneficial to the spiritual progress and emotional healing of others. God’s love, through the power of the Holy Spirit, will motivate us to speak words of understanding and encouragement; meeting others at their point of need. When we speak love to those who are able and willing to listen, the Holy Spirit will use our words to bless, give grace, and help others to keep moving forward spiritually and emotionally
“Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace [God’s favor] to those who hear it” Eph.4:29
